It is with great pleasure that I announce my candidacy to represent Virginia’s 11th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives! Northern Virginia has some of the nation’s highest income counties. Yet, racism and classism create large inequities that are the result of discriminatory practices. For example, there are significant wealth gaps between white communities and communities of color. The high cost of education, housing, and healthcare is exacerbating these disparities. At the same time, our immigrant communities face constant threats to their rights and wellbeing. I have a bold vision for the future of our country where we use our immense wealth to fix these problems by uplifting working class people, communities of color, and others who face societal marginalization.
To combat these complex issues, we have to center the experiences of those who struggle against societal inequity everyday. As a society, we need a cultural and structural shift. We must value the lives of those who are oppressed and create laws to fight against systems of injustice, such as poverty and white supremacy. I am posed to confront these challenges head on in partnership with our community. As a working class person, I know what it’s like to struggle to find a job, take on thousands of dollars in student debt, and worry about paying bills. Through my personal experience and my community activism, I understand how racism and xenophobia tear families apart, harm people’s lives and spread fear.
To achieve a better society, we need leaders who will bring about progressive changes by fighting for bold solutions to our complex problems. As an activist, a working class person, and a community leader, I will fight for policies such as the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, investigating reparations and defunding ICE. Fighting for a society where everyone has healthcare, everyone can afford a high quality education, everyone can live on a healthy planet, everyone can flee oppression and build a better life, and no one faces discrimination means that we have to build large movements of collaboration, respect, and social justice. As a grassroots community activist, I have brought people together to advocate for progressive policies. I will stand in solidarity with and work alongside those who are already fighting for social change so that we can pass laws that will bring tangible benefits to our communities.
